JVC is a company that I don’t here about much these days, but what a surprise it is to hear that they’ll be shipping a new 4K camera this March.  Now lets not get to excited yet about this $5000 rig.  JVC chose to buck conventional wisdom by employing an 1/2″ sensor rather than a large Super35 or even MicroFourThirds sensor. (no super shallow DoF here)

This 3840 x 2160 (Quad HD actually) camera is capable of recording 24p, 50p, or 60p in the H.264 codec at up to 144Mbps to SDHC & SDXC cards.  The GY-HMQ10 is a palmcorder style camera with a fixed  10x zoom lens.  While this may not compete with any of the other 4K cinema cameras that are out there, doc filmmakers might be very happy to have such a high quality image maker in a small, affordable and easy to use package.  I can’t wait to seem some images!
